The United States Embassy in Abuja and the Consulate General in Lagos have announced a temporary suspension of operations today, Monday, May 26, 2025, in observance of Memorial Day, a prominent federal holiday in the United States.
The announcement was made via the official X (formerly Twitter) handle of the US Mission in Nigeria. It stated that all routine consular services would be unavailable for the day. Normal operations are expected to resume on Tuesday, May 27.
Memorial Day, observed annually on the last Monday in May, is a solemn occasion dedicated to honoring American military personnel who lost their lives in the line of duty. It is marked across the United States with national flags, parades, wreath-laying ceremonies, and moments of reflection in memory of the fallen.
“In observance of Memorial Day, our offices in Abuja and Lagos will be closed on Monday, May 26. We will resume normal services on Tuesday, May 27,” the US Mission stated.
The US Mission also urged individuals needing emergency consular assistance to visit the official embassy website for urgent contact information and further guidance.
Memorial Day is not only a day of remembrance but also signifies the unofficial start of summer in the United States. Many Americans use the long weekend to spend time with family and reflect on the sacrifices of service members.
