South African actress Terry Pheto has paid a heartfelt tribute following the sudden passing of her Tsotsi co-star, Presley Chweneyagae.
The award-winning actor, who rose to international acclaim for his lead role in the Oscar-winning film, died at the age of 40.
The news was confirmed in a statement released by his management agency, MLA, on behalf of the Chweneyagae family.
“It is with profound sadness that we confirm the untimely passing of one of South Africa’s most gifted and beloved actors, Presley Chweneyagae, at the age of 40,” the statement read.
Chweneyagae became a household name in 2005 with his powerful performance as Tsotsi, a role that earned him international recognition.
The film went on to win the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film at the 78th Oscars. His performance also earned him the Black Movie Award for Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role.
Terry Pheto, who starred alongside Presley in Tsotsi, took to social media to share emotional memories, including photos of them holding the Oscar at the 2005 ceremony. In a touching tribute, she wrote:
“I’m shocked and saddened by the news of Presley’s sudden passing. My heart goes out to his family and the rest of our friends and colleagues in the film industry. We shared an unforgettable moment when we won the Oscar. It’s a moment I will forever cherish. May his soul rest in peace.”
The outpouring of grief has extended across South Africa’s entertainment community.
Actress Mampho Brescia expressed her sorrow, writing, “So terribly sorry to hear. May his soul rest in eternal peace and may God comfort those who loved and cared for him. A tragic loss for us all.”
Media personality and television producer Carol Bouwer added, “I thought of your heart, my love. So, so sad. Sending you and his family and friends prayers at this time.”
While Tsotsi was the film that propelled him to global fame, Chweneyagae remained a beloved figure on South African television.
He was particularly known for his role as Cobra on the popular 1Magic drama The River, and most recently reprised the character in the spin-off series Cobrizzi on Mzansi Magic.
Presley Chweneyagae’s passing marks a significant loss to South Africa’s film and television landscape. He is remembered not only for his exceptional talent and groundbreaking performances but also for his humility, generosity, and enduring impact on the arts.
