Miley Cyrus has dismissed claims that the gold dress she wore in her Flowers music video was a subtle jab at Jennifer Lawrence.
In the visual for her 2023 hit single Flowers, Cyrus appears in a vintage gold lamé Saint Laurent gown featuring cutouts on the bodice and a dramatic oversized hood.
Following the video’s release, some fans speculated that the look might have been a nod to the gold lamé Prabal Gurung dress Jennifer Lawrence wore to the 2012 Hunger Games premiere, where she posed alongside co-star Liam Hemsworth—Cyrus’s then-boyfriend.
However, the pop star recently addressed the rumors in a video circulating on social media.
After an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! earlier this month, Cyrus was approached by a fan while signing autographs outside the studio. The fan asked, “Was your Flowers dress a reference to Jennifer Lawrence?”
Cyrus, 32, replied: “No, but I love that dress of hers.”
She did not elaborate further.
Jennifer Lawrence had already addressed the speculation in a 2023 segment of Plead the Fifth on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen.
Cohen asked, “There was already a lot of talk that the music video was referencing a secret fling that you had with Liam Hemsworth while he was with Miley Cyrus. Can you please respond to this?”
Lawrence responded, “I would love to: Not true, total rumour. I mean, we all know me and Liam, like, kissed one time. It was years after they’d broke up,” referencing a kiss from The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1. “So I just assumed that was, like, a coincidence.”
Miley Cyrus and Hemsworth began dating in 2009, got engaged in 2012, but called off the engagement in 2013. They later rekindled their relationship in 2016 and married in December 2018, before separating in August 2019. Their divorce was finalized in early 2020.
Miley Cyrus is currently in a relationship with musician Maxx Morando, while Hemsworth is dating model Gabriella Brooks.
