Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has reaffirmed Robert Sanchez as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper despite the Blues’ recent failed attempt to sign AC Milan’s Mike Maignan.
Chelsea were reportedly in talks to secure Maignan’s services earlier this summer, but negotiations collapsed after the club failed to meet AC Milan’s hefty valuation.
With Chelsea now in the United States, preparing for their Club World Cup opener against LAFC, Maresca made it clear that the club’s goalkeeping structure remains stable.
“The keeper situation is simple,” Maresca told reporters. “Robert is No.1, Filip is No.2 and we will analyse and judge Penders.”
The three goalkeepers included in the squad for the tournament are Robert Sanchez, Filip Jorgensen, and new signing Mike Penders.
While Maignan remains a long-term target, Maresca refused to comment on any ongoing transfer discussions, saying:
“Maignan and different players at other clubs, I don’t think it is worth talking about them.”
Chelsea are favourites to top Group D and progress to the knockout rounds. Reports suggest any renewed bid for Maignan will likely occur after the Club World Cup concludes.
