President Donald Trump of the United States has officially imposed a 15 percent import tariff on Nigeria and several other African countries, including Zimbabwe, Zambia, Uganda, Mozambique, Mauritius, Ghana, Malawi, Lesotho, and Madagascar.

The move was confirmed in a White House statement released on Thursday, under an Executive Order titled “Further Modifying the Reciprocal Tariff Rates.”

According to the order, the new tariffs will take effect starting from 12:01 a.m. on goods entered for consumption or withdrawn from warehouses.

Other African nations such as South Africa, Libya, and Tunisia were hit with even higher tariffs—30 percent for both South Africa and Libya, and 25 percent for Tunisia.

Beyond Africa, countries like the United Kingdom (10 percent), India (25 percent), and Japan (15 percent) were also listed in the wide-reaching trade directive.

This development follows an earlier Executive Order issued on April 2, 2025, which initially signaled the U.S. government’s intention to enforce tariffs on multiple nations, including Nigeria.

The Centre for the Promotion of Private Enterprise has since weighed in on the potential economic consequences for Nigeria, warning of adverse impacts on trade and inflation.
