Chelsea Football Club has been charged with 74 breaches of the FA’s Agent Regulation rules covering a 13-year span, with the majority of cases linked to the period between 2010/11 and 2015/16 under the ownership of Roman Abramovich.
The Football Association confirmed that the alleged violations relate to the club’s dealings with agents and intermediaries during transfers and player contracts. Chelsea has until 19 September 2025 to formally respond to the charges.
What the Charges Mean for Chelsea
The FA’s investigation casts a fresh spotlight on financial practices during Abramovich’s tenure. The club, which enjoyed major success in this era, including a Premier League title in 2015 and the 2012 UEFA Champions League, now faces potential sanctions if found guilty. Punishments could range from hefty fines to possible points deductions, depending on the severity of the breaches.
Ongoing Scrutiny of Chelsea’s Finances
This is not the first time Chelsea’s historical accounts have been questioned. In 2023, UEFA fined the club for providing incomplete financial information relating to past seasons, while the Premier League has also been investigating separate matters tied to Abramovich-era payments.
With these fresh FA charges, Chelsea could face further reputational and financial setbacks at a time when the club is already working to comply with Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) under current owner Todd Boehly.
What Happens Next
The FA has not yet disclosed what specific penalties may apply if Chelsea are found guilty, but similar breaches in the past have led to fines, suspensions, or competitive sanctions. The outcome will depend on the club’s formal response and the FA’s disciplinary process in the coming months.
