Nigeria Eliminated After 4-0 Thrashing by Sudan

The Super Eagles of Nigeria boosted their chances of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Lesotho on Friday evening.

Heading into the match, Nigeria sat third in Group C with 11 points, trailing South Africa and group leaders Benin Republic. The team knew that only a win would keep their qualification hopes intact — and they delivered under pressure.

Despite dominating the first half, the Super Eagles were unable to convert their chances into goals. However, the breakthrough came shortly after the restart when Nigeria was awarded a penalty, confidently converted by captain William Troost-Ekong to give the hosts the lead.

Debutant Akor Adams marked his first appearance for the national team with a fine goal to double Nigeria’s advantage, but a momentary lapse in concentration at the back allowed Lesotho to pull one back late in the game.

The result ensures that Nigeria remain firmly in contention for a World Cup spot. The Super Eagles will now look to seal qualification when they face Benin Republic in their final group match next Tuesday in Uyo.
