Former Kaduna Central lawmaker and human rights activist, Shehu Sani, has expressed concern that advanced democracies around the world are gradually transforming into modern-day dictatorships.
In a post shared on his verified X (formerly Twitter) handle on Saturday, Sani lamented that individuals are now being intimidated, threatened, or sacked from their jobs simply for exercising their freedom of speech on social media.
He accused the global system of silencing voices of dissent, particularly within the legislature, adding that freedom is now in reverse gear.
“Everything happening in dictatorships is now gradually happening in the most advanced democracy; punishing universities for permitting protests, disobeying and disrespecting judges as well as witch-hunting political opponents and arraigning them in court on concocted charges,” he wrote.
Sani further highlighted signs of democratic decay, including attempts at presidential tenure extension, deployment of troops without due process, and harassment of the media.
According to him, these worrying developments show that the world may be getting tired of democracy, as institutions once built to protect liberty are now being used to suppress it.
