Afrobeat Star Crayon Mourns Mother’s Death

Nigerian Afrobeat singer Charles Chukwu, popularly known as Crayon, has announced the passing of his beloved mother, Mrs. Evelyn Chukwu, describing her as his “rock, backbone, and angel.”

The Mavin Records artiste revealed that his mother died on July 4, in an emotional tribute shared on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday evening.

Crayon recounted that his mother had prayed for him just days before her passing, a monthly ritual she never missed.

“I didn’t know that would be your last prayer. You sounded so healthy and like nothing was wrong. Only for my whole world to suddenly crumble right in front of me,” he wrote.

The singer described the moment he saw her lifeless body on a hospital bed as “the darkest day of my life,” saying it shattered him completely.

Expressing his heartbreak, Crayon questioned the timing of her death — coming only days before his birthday and at a time when the family had finally begun to enjoy financial stability after years of struggle.

“After all the suffer wey we don suffer for decades, na now wey God don bless us, you come die leave me? Wetin come be the need?” he lamented in a mix of English and Pidgin.

He praised his late mother as a “warrior” who endured and sacrificed for the family through difficult times, vowing to stay strong and continue taking care of the family as she would have wanted.

“I will never say goodbye because I know you are living through me and you are always with me. Thank you for everything, my beautiful mummy. Till we meet again, my angel,” Crayon wrote.

He confirmed that Mrs. Chukwu has since been laid to rest.
