Nigerian singer Waje has revealed that she was the female voice behind P-Square’s 2007 hit song “Do Me”, but surprisingly, she never received any financial compensation for her contribution.
Speaking during an interview on the HonestBunch Podcast with Daddy Freeze, the 45-year-old singer said:
“I didn’t earn a dime from P-Square’s ‘Do Me’.”
Waje, whose real name is Aituaje Iruobe, delivered the iconic chorus that made the track a nationwide anthem. However, she explained that she was never officially credited or featured by name on the song.
“Imagine being in Onitsha market and you start telling people, that’s my voice every time ‘Do Me’ is played, and they are looking at you like, who are you? They didn’t believe me,” she recalled.
The soulful singer rose to fame in the mid-2000s after her vocals on P-Square’s “Do Me” captivated listeners across Africa. Despite the massive success of the song, Waje said she was excluded from the music video because she did not have a passport at the time.
“Do Me” was one of the standout tracks on P-Square’s third studio album, Game Over, released in 2007. The music duo, made up of twin brothers Peter and Paul Okoye, dominated the African music scene throughout the 2000s with hit singles such as “Bizzy Body,” “Roll It,” and “No One Like You.”
The brothers later parted ways in 2016 due to personal and managerial disagreements, reuniting briefly in 2021 before resuming their solo music careers.
