Don Jazzy Opens Up on Why Marriage Scares Him

Popular Nigerian music producer and Mavin Records boss, Michael Collins Ajereh, popularly known as Don Jazzy, has revealed that marriage still scares him despite his fame, fortune, and success.

Speaking on HabbyFX’s YouTube channel, the 42-year-old hitmaker opened up about his struggles with love, relationships, and the fear of vulnerability.

Don Jazzy, who was married in 2003 but divorced two years later, explained that while he has seen beautiful marriages, he has also witnessed enough failed ones to make him cautious.

“There are good ones, there are bad ones. My parents were madly in love before my mom died. We see examples like that that make you believe in relationships and crave it and want something like that,” he said.

“But we also have bad examples from both sides. Some men are violent, some are chronic cheats. And when relationship breakups hit social media, with people washing their dirty linen in public, it gives me fear.”

He further admitted that being emotionally open no longer comes easily to him.

“You try to be vulnerable with one person out there. I am still waiting for God. They said when you find the one, you will have butterflies in your stomach,” he said with a smile.

The Mavin boss also confessed that financial concerns play a major role in his fear of remarriage, noting that divorce can be financially devastating for men.

“A man has to lose half of all that he has worked for in his life — that’s those ones without a prenup, like in America. You see some people who have struggled all their life, but when they divorce, they have to split the properties. All those things used to scare me. The money that I have amassed is for my generation,” he explained.

When asked if he has given love another chance, Don Jazzy admitted that he has dated after his divorce but remains single at the moment.

“I’ve actually dated before. Currently, I’m single. Na fear, though God’s time is the best. I just want the right person. At the same time, I’m not sure if I’m the right person for somebody’s daughter,” he said.

Reflecting on his personal growth, he noted that he is becoming a better person both emotionally and spiritually.

“Am I the ideal partner? Am I disciplined enough to be with one person? As I am working on myself, I pray to God on how to make myself a better person. Over the years, I have become a better person. When I was young, I was a menace, but I’m getting older and wiser,” he added.

On the subject of his favourite artists, Don Jazzy said it’s hard to choose one because he draws inspiration from many.

“It’s not as easy as that for me because, as a creative person, or like a music producer, that siren I’m hearing now is giving me an idea for beats,” he said with a laugh.

“I like Johnny Drille; he’s very talented. He’s an all-rounder. But in the country, the people who have pushed the culture forward are Wizkid, Davido, Burna Boy, 2Face, D’banj, and Olamide.”

Don Jazzy also shared that he now leads a quieter life, spending most of his time indoors or in the studio.

“When I was younger, I was always moving around. But now, I delegate. I’m an improver now. I’m always indoors, inside my house, inside the office, or inside the studio — and they’re all close by,” he said.

“I have people in place who are capable of putting out fires once they arise. One can’t do it alone. Even God is all-powerful, but He can’t do everything by Himself.”

When asked about his faith, the Mavin CEO said he still believes in God but has become more cautious about organised religion.

“I believe in God, by birth. But nowadays, I get sceptical about churches with how things are now. But I believe in God,” he said.
