Senate Confirms Justice Joseph Oyewole as Supreme Court Justice

The Nigerian Senate has confirmed Joseph Olubunmi Kayode Oyewole, JCA, as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.

The confirmation followed the presentation and consideration of a report by the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights & Legal Matters, chaired by Adeniyi Adegbonmire, during plenary on Tuesday.

Presenting the report, Senator Adegbonmire moved that the Senate receive and consider the committee’s findings on the confirmation of Justice Oyewole’s nomination to the apex court, a motion that was subsequently adopted.

Justice Oyewole’s confirmation comes after Bola Tinubu transmitted a letter to the Senate last week seeking legislative approval for the appointment, in line with Section 231 (2) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).

The letter, read on the floor by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, stated the President’s request for an expeditious confirmation of the nominee.

Following the reading of the executive communication, Akpabio had referred the nomination to the Judiciary Committee for screening and report, paving the way for Tuesday’s confirmation.

With the Senate’s approval secured, Justice Oyewole is set to take his place on the Supreme Court bench, strengthening the country’s highest court.
