The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has declared that he will support only candidates who align with President Bola Tinubu’s agenda in the forthcoming FCT Area Council elections scheduled for February 21, regardless of their political party.
Wike made the statement on Saturday night in Abuja during the 60th birthday celebration of Senator Sandy Onor. He reiterated that he has no regrets about backing Tinubu and insisted he would work to ensure that only candidates supportive of the President emerge victorious.
“We have the FCT Area Council election coming up on February 21, and I have a duty to support any candidate that supports President Tinubu to win,” Wike said. “It is also my duty to ensure that any candidate who is not supporting Tinubu does not win in the election, and I owe no apology on my stand.”
At the event, Wike described Onor as a loyal ally and dependable friend, praising his steadfastness even in difficult times.
In his remarks, Prof. Anthony Eyang highlighted Onor’s background, noting that he was born on February 14, 1966, in Ikom, Cross River State, and rose from academia at the University of Calabar to the Nigerian Senate.
Chairman of the planning committee, Philip Aduda, said the celebration was also a thanksgiving for Onor’s journey in public service.
Former Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom, representing Okezie Ikpeazu, praised Onor as a distinguished leader prepared for higher responsibilities.
Also speaking, former Attorney General of the Federation Kalu Agabi commended Onor’s intellect and constitutional stance.
A Festschrift compiled in Onor’s honour was unveiled at the ceremony, with a reported donation of N50 million to support the publication.
In his response, Onor expressed gratitude to his family and supporters, reflecting on the importance of excellence, integrity, and faith as he marked his 60th birthday.
